cowl – Woolly Orbit

I started this on Friday on my lunch break at work. Proving I CAN be productive when I’m resting!

I didn’t follow a pattern, it was straight out of my head but I think it looks pretty cool.

I just used up what little bits of acrylic DK neon yarn I had lying around from a previous project last year (remember that little Fair Isle Knitted Bag I made? It was from that project) and so it was a quick and easy and cheap make!

I wanted a cowl that would be short and would sort of stand up by itself if that makes sense? I didn’t want a long one that would wrap around my neck 3 times.

I’ll try and write the pattern from what I can remember, but it might not be the most exact pattern in the world as I didn’t make notes at the time…

Simple Crochet Cowl

Chain a multiple of 4 plus 3 extra chains. I think I chained 121 (118 +3 turning chains).

Join in the round, being careful not to twist the chains.

1tr in 3rd chain from hook and then 1tr in every stitch for the entire round.

Slip stitch into the 3rd chain of your first 3 chains. Chain 3 (does not count as a stitch).

In the next 2 stitches do a front post treble in each stitch and in the next 2 stitches after that do a back post treble in each stitch. This sets your 2 x 2 rib pattern. Carry on like this for the entire round. 2 front post trebles and then 2 back post trebles.

When you come to the end of the round slip stitch into the 3rd chain of your 3 turning chains and chain 3 which sets you up for the next round.

Continue in this way for as wide as you want your cowl to be (making a front post treble in the previous front post treble and a back post treble in the previous back post trebles on the row below).

I did 20 rows in total with 2 rows of each colour repeated.

To finish, on your last round just slip stitch into the 3rd chain of the turning chains and sew in the yarn ends.

That’s it!

Hopefully if you know a little bit about crochet, this will all make sense to you! If not…ah well!

In real life the yellow is a vibrant bright neon, alas it’s not in these photos!!

One of these hats was hand knitted and the other knitted on a loom. Can you spot the difference?

Yes! You were right! The one on the right was loom knitted and the one on the left was hand knitted with 2 needles.

It’s very difficult to get the lighting right, so neither of these pics are true to life but I can assure you, the colour is a gorgeous mustard yellow.

Since I STILL had some leftover I thought I would make a little scarf or cowl, I know, I know, I have enough of these already, but I just wanted an excuse to use my straight loom since I don’t use it very often!

I actually love the feel of the fabric from the straight loom better than the round one (for the hat). It seems denser somehow.

The yarn is King Cole Big Value Chunky and I just have the rest of the ball in the picture below to use up and then it’s out of my stash!
